AICP Certification Maintenance
Starts in 2008

AICP planners must start thinking about logging CM credits! Beginning this January 1,
AICP members must earn a total of 32 CM credits within a two-year reporting period.
According to National APA, by ensuring that  members have up-to-date skills and
training in best practices, CM enhances the credibility of the planning profession and
increases the value of your AICP credential.

List of Self Study Courses Qualify for Certification Maintenance (CM) CreditMNAPA - Minnesota Chapter American Planning Association

Folks,

Here is some really big news for all of us chasing those CM credits:  There is now a list of self-study courses that qualify for CM credits!

Yes, this is a change to policies that have been posted at various times about CM since its inception.   At first they qualified, then only so many credits could be self-study . . . .BOTTOM LINE:  There is now a list of self-study courses for you to choose from and there is NO LIMIT to the number of credits you obtain in this way.  This was verified in a National PDO (Professional Development Officer) conference call just last week.

This is how you find the list.   Go to the following link on the National APA website:  www.planning.org/cm/  on the National APA website.   If you have not logged in, you will be requested to do so.  On the left side of the page is a column of choices.  Click on the fourth line down:  Find Upcoming CM Events.  This brings up a calendar of upcoming activities.  At the top of the calendar, you will have three choices:  Events Calendar, Events List, and Self-Study Courses.  Click on the Self-Study Courses for the entire list.

A couple of cautions:

Check the dates listed under each title—Some expire BEFORE the end of the calendar year.  Don’t buy something that won’t qualify because of the date!

Check the price by clicking on ”More Information”—At the end of the brief description of each source, you have the opportunity to request more information.  Do it—it’s the only way to find the price.

And a couple of recommendations:

Since some of these prices can be high, see if there are others who are willing to share the cost with you.  One idea might be to have your District Director hold a “brown-bag” event, or an evening event using the self-study product as a topic.

Another idea would be to contact the local planners you work with every day (surrounding communities, folks you work with in your MPO, planners in your agency, etc.) and see if they will split the cost with you.

And if you think some of the ideas are good enough for the Minnesota APA State Planning Conference in September in Duluth, let us know—but soon!  We’ll see if we can work it in to the program!
